AGRICOLA SOI

The return to the soil: choice and destiny

The AGRICOLA SOI is a small winery in Nuragus with the mission to protect local values and traditions. The project was started by its founder Stefano Soi with the idea to emphasize the cultural aspects of agriculture.

Stefano's paternal grandfather, Efisio, known for his nineteenth-century moustache and rigid outlook on life, was one of the first oenologists in the long-standing tradition of Sardinian wine-making. He spent most of his long life as an agronomist overseeing the agricultural programs in the nearby penal colonies of Sarcidano and Castiadas - both places where prisoners were given the opportunity to repay their debts to society through agricultural labor.

While Stefano's father was from Nuragus, his mother had her roots in Tuscany. Her brother, Stefano's uncle Gino, ran a beautiful Tuscan farm where Stefano spent his youth learning everything about all facets of Viticulture, from the vineyards to the cellars.

While building a career as an architect, Stefano found himself in different cities - Innsbruck, Padova, Venice; however, over the years his love for the vineyards and the countryside never waned.
With the encouragement of family and dear friends Angelo Angioi and Gilberto Arru, Stefano eventually followed his heart and realized his dream of establishing his very own winery.
Still working as an architect today, his professional knowledge and experience in renovating historical centers of Sardinien communities greatly influenced the choices of materials in the construction of the winery. He used traditional materials such as stone, wood, and steel as well as sustainable insulation such as sheep wool and cork.

To illustrate the philosophy of the Agricola Soi, two words are critical:
Appartenenza and Rispetto.

Appartenenza refers to the heritage and roots that form the microcosm that is the Sardinian town of Nuragus and its picturesque hills. Nuragus lies in the heart of the island and thrives on agriculture and sheep-farming. Between ancient olive trees and grape vines, the region is characterized by wide pastures and grasslands. The sun and the dueling winds of the Scirocco and the Maestrale offer a constant interplay. The dry soil, rich with rock and loose sand, compels the vines to slowly grow and extend their roots deep into the earth.
Until only a few decades ago, only one kind of grape was used to produce the local wine. The vine, known in the Phoenician era as Axina de Margiani - grape of the foxes - is now known as Nuragus, from which the town borrows its name.

We do not know why our ancestors chose this area to plant the grapevines, maybe the exposure, the light, the wind... definitely the energy you feel when walking these hills.

Rispetto refers to the respect for the ancient traditions of local wine-making, the sustainable development of the region, and the family-oriented agricultural heritage. Upon returning to his birthplace, Stefano together with his wife Evi and their dog Lillu embraced this new philosophy and chose to run their business accordingly.
In fact, Stefano does not use any herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers, but instead relies purely on rainwater for irrigation and constant labor in the vineyards. Indigeneous vines, the Cannonau, the Bovale Muristellu, the Monica, the Cagnulari, the Barbera Sardo, and the Nuragus, are planted by hand.
The vines are pruned according to the Simonit & Sirch soft-pruning method, harvested manually in boxes of 20kg, and then immediately sent to fermentation.

In collaboration with the oenologist and friend Ado Buiani, this approach led to the creation of Agricola Soi’s five elegant wines which embody Mediterranean character and mineral essence typical to the region's hills and soil.

•	SOI, a very traditional Cannonau of Sardinia DOC with floral and fruity notes, a rather unconventional flavor with great balance.
•	LUN, a very intense IGT of predominantly Bovale grapes, crisp with hints of capers, anchovies, and sweet spices.
•	NURA', the first Nuragus DOC bottled in Nuragus, aged in terracotta amphoras, an elegant wine, reminiscent of the Mediterranean Macchia where Asphodels and Helichrysum plants grow.
•	NèA, a Cannonau of Sardinia DOC Rosè, fresh and lively in a unique rose hue with aromatic nuances of rose petals, pomegranate, and unripe cherries; fruity and lingering.
•	Lillò, a red dessert wine IGT Rosso Passito, dry, late harvest, velvety with hints of dried fruit and nuances of fruits such as cherries steeped in spirits, and aroma of Sardinian myrtle.

We are honored to be recognized with the following accolades which encourage us to continue with our philosophy:
The OSCAR 2017 award from “Gambero Rosso”.
Two red glasses from “Gambero Rosso” in the 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 editions.
The inclusion of all Agricola Soi wines into the “ViniBuoni d'Italia” guide by the Touring Club with four stars.
Recognition among the top ten “Eccellenze della Sardegna” food awards by “Guida di Repubblica”.
Three diplomas of the WHA in Merano Wine Festival.
