Fattoria di Rietine

GEOLOGY:
The region’s geology provided our vineyard with a variety of different soil structures, predominantly clay, brick earth and gravel, but also porphyry composites. What appeared to be a great challenge at the beginning, turned out to be a unique opportunity to stand out from our competitors. As a consequence, all those years we planted appropriate and suitable one year old vines, so that today the grape varieties Sangiovese, Merlot and Ancellotta are at home in Rietine enabling us to produce wines of exceptional quality and a plenitude of facets.

WINEYARD:
The vineyard stretches across a southern slope in Rietine, close to Gaiole in Chianti, on an overall area of thirteen hectares, 350 to 450 metres above sea level. Since 1993, the year the whole adventure started, all of the vines have been renewed and today the whole property is in full production. The “scasso” is known as the first step of plant renewal in which the ground is completely ploughed – going down as far as one and a half meters – and freed from boulders and larger stones. Then the one year old vines are planted at a distance of 80 cm distance and subsequently cultivated according to the Guyot system. Today’s density of 5,000 young, producing vines per hectare makes for the perfect, sustainable ratio of highest yield versus best possible quality.

WINERY:
The actual winery is located above the vineyard and is part of a historical complex of buildings, with a free view across the picturesque hills of the Chianti. With a floor space of 375 sqm it offers sufficient room on the ground floor for the whole wine-making infrastructure with fermenting tanks, barrels and Barriques as well as an adequate, representative tasting area. The first floor offers almost half of the space and accommodates the administrative division.
